Most air conditioners and heat pumps use a refrigerant called R22.
Emissions of R22 are considered by some experts to be a significant
factor in depleting the ozone layer that protects us from the sun's
harmful rays. Federal law requires that all manufacturers phase out
ozone–depleting refrigerants in the next few years. Ask for an air
conditioner or heat pump that uses the more efficient and
environmentally friendlier refrigerant, R410a. What is refrigerant? Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Contained within the coils of an air conditioning system, these agents make it possible to cool and dehumidify indoor air. What is R22? R22 is a commonly used refrigerant that is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) compound, which contains ozone–depleting chlorine. What is R410a? R410a is a commonly used refrigerant that contains no chlorine and is ozone–responsible. It has a higher cooling capacity and performs better than other coolants, providing greater indoor comfort. Will an R410a air conditioner or heat pump cost more? The total cost of installing a new air conditioner or heat pump is affected by many factors. Air conditioners and heat pumps that contain R410a are likely to be slightly more expensive for at least a few more years. However, as R22 is phased out, R410a will become less expensive to own and operate. Speak with your local Armstrong Air™ dealer so you can make the most informed decision. Do I have to replace my current R22 air conditioner or heat pump now? No. The new federal law does not affect existing units and the production of R22 is not scheduled to be phased out until 2010, so there will be R22 available for servicing units. If I buy an air conditioner or heat pump now, does it have to use R410a? No. Air conditioners using R22 can be manufactured until 2010, and the production of R22 is not scheduled to be phased out until 2010. Why should I buy an R410a air conditioner or heat pump now?
